Not to be confused with Compact Dirt, Tall Grass, or Sea Grass.

Grass is a block naturally found on the player's island upon starting the game. Smelting it in a campfire, small furnace, or desert furnace will convert it into dried grass, while plowing it will convert it into farmland.

Design[]

The color of grass varies depending on the current season. During spring, grass will become more vibrant, while during summer, grass will return to its original color. Grass will become more yellow-green during fall and during winter, grass will have snow on top of it.

Dried grass shares the same texture as the normal grass block but has a more yellow and saturated grass layer.

Obtaining[]

Natural generation[]

815 blocks of grass are naturally generated on the player's island when first joining the game. Additional grass can generate on resource islands.

Purchasing[]

Grass can be bought from John for 5 coins each.

Quests[]

Before the February 26, 2021 update, grass could have been obtainable through completing legacy quests. Since then, those quests have been removed, and grass can not be obtained this way.

Holes[]

After digging for truffles, pigs will leave a small hole that will grant 1 block of grass if removed.

Usage[]

Grass is mainly used for building and terraforming. If a block is placed on it, it will lose its top layer and become a dirt block. Tall grass, certain types of flowers, and wild rocks can spawn on grass.

Smelting[]

Smelting grass in a campfire, small furnace, or desert furnace will turn it into dried grass. Dried grass will turn back into grass when plowed or if a block is placed above it.

Farming[]

Saplings, berry bushes, flowers, and bamboo can be planted and grown on normal grass.

Using a plow on a grass block will create farmland. Wheat, tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, onions, starfruits, spinach, pumpkins, watermelon, radishes, spirit crops, chili peppers, pineapples, and void parasites can be planted and grown on this block. Plowing the farmland again or placing a block above it will turn it back into grass.

Farmland can be watered with a watering can or basic sprinkler or fertilized with basic fertilizer to turn it into watered/fertilized farmland respectively, allowing crops to grow 20% faster. Watering and fertilizing farmland will allow crops to grow 30% faster.
